Do you feel that working Latinas face unique challenges, and if so, what are they?
Yes, we do. The socialization process is such that we learn to associate Latina women with individuals who provide a service, not individuals who are successful leaders.
Is discrimination still a problem, and if so how does it differ from that faced by Hispanic males and other minority workers?
Latinas seem to face double discrimination: gender and ethnicity. But the book is not about feeling discriminated against. Rather, it’s about facing and working through discrimination.
How important is life balance to professional success for Latinas?
It is very important; it is the way our book subjects define success.
How do religious and cultural traditions matter in this context?
Our participants take religion and culture very seriously, and aspire, for instance, to leave the world better than they found it, and care for extended family members to the best of their ability.
In your view, is mentoring especially valuable with respect to Latinas aspiring to professional and/or entrepreneurial success?
Absolutely.
What specific advice would you have for Latinas about to enter college?
Continue your education, and dedicate yourself to something you are passionate about.
How about those poised to enter the workforce?
Work with your talents, cultivate your gifts, and follow your call.
