5 Steps to Squash Energy Draining Thoughts

2.  Identify or label your Emotions: 

Emotions are complicated. There are 8 (or 9) basic emotions people feel which include:

 

 

  • Anger and Fear
  • Happiness (Joy) and Sadness
  • Surprise and Anticipation
  • Trust and Disgust and some theories add Contempt
  •  

Then there are a whole lot of other secondary emotions such as jealousy, frustration, love and so many more.

If you are repeating negative thoughts to the point of distraction you need to try and pinpoint the emotion that is causing the thoughts. When you can label your emotion you have a better grip on addressing the underlying problem.

3.  Deconstruct and Challenge Your Negative Thoughts:

Sometimes there are valuable truths in those negative thoughts but once you begin to deconstruct your thoughts you are able to challenge the details. Consider the voracity, accuracy and legitimacy of your negative thoughts. Pull out what is not useful and keep only the small parts of your thoughts that are tangible and you can do something about.

4.  Accept Your Thoughts as Thoughts:

When you can accept that your negative thoughts are ideas in your head based on your perceptions and symptoms of emotions you can begin to take steps to get a hold of them. Pay attention to them, experience them but respond to them as thoughts and not tangible things.

5.  Now Focus on What You Can Manage and Let Go What You Cannot.

It sounds easy but accepting that there are things under and things not your control is important. This is where they Fake Until You Make It. Find ways to address the real problems your inner negativity demonstrated you can being changing your negative self-talk to the ‘I think I can, I think I can’ track. This is where the infamous positive affirmation self-help talk can be beneficial. Tell yourself you can manage the negatives and that you will focus on the positives to boost productivity.

Positive Self-Talk

The role of positive self-talk in success remains strong. As you begin to understand where your negative self-talk originates you can begin to replace negative self-talk with positive and affirming self-talk. The sooner you do the sooner you will receive the rewards. Sometimes you do need to ‘Fake It’ as you seek to ‘Become It’.
